From harmonizing product terms, to sharing Best Practices, to promoting greater market transparency –The MIOA is working well for producers and buyers in the Americas.
Washington, DC, July 30th (IICA) - The Executive Committee of The Market Information Organization of the Americas (MIOA) met in Washington, DC on July 24 and 25, 2019. “IICA has proudly served as MIOA Technical Secretariat since 2004 and during this time, USDA has contributed well over $2million in support of MIOA”, stated Mari Stull, IICA’s Representative in the United States.
“We are grateful for this IICA’s successful partnership with the USDA that is adding real and tangible results for our Agricultural Sector in the Americas”, Stull added.
Erin Morris, Associate Administrator of USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is using her well-accomplished skills in agricultural regulatory, marketing, and inspection programs to guide MIOA in their next steps.
The MIOA is strengthening national institutions that collects, process, analyze and disseminate information relative to markets and agricultural commodities to promote efficient and transparent market information systems (MIS) that meets the needs of all the key players of the agricultural value chain.
The Executive Committee meets three times each year to define the organization’s strategic orientation, to evaluate progress and to delineate the work plan to ensure the fulfillment of the Organization´s objectives. AMS Director for Specialty Crops Market News, Terry Long serves as Chair of the Executive Committee and was instrumental to the establishment of MIOA.
“We all owe a debt of gratitude to Terry Long’s vision and extraordinary dedication in making MIOA a reality – and, in IICA’s estimation, a very positive return on that investment. And with your guidance and recommendations, IICA stands ready to support all efforts to grow MIOA as the world leader in the critical area of agricultural markets and information related to those markets”, Mari Stull remarked.
Enabling MIOA to better serve the needs of its member countries, the IICA Technical Secretariat developed a self-evaluation methodology that was carried out during June-July, 2019. The results will be used to identify, systematize and share good practices in the collection, management, analysis and dissemination of market information, and to propose and execute new projects to strengthen MIOA´s members.
During the first semester of this year MIOA strengthened the capacities of more than 130 people in the Americas on issues related to price analysis in trade through IICA´s virtual platform.
