Organizations will work jointly to strengthen food production in the Americas over the next decades, according to Gloria Abraham, IICA Representative in Mexico.
Mexico City. The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) will initiate research and training projects in sustainable systems for corn and wheat production, in order to promote food production in the Americas from Mexico.
IICA and CIMMYT signed a framework agreement in order to carry out technical cooperation activities in areas such as technological innovation, natural resources management, agronomic practices, the environment, genetic resources, climate change, food security, evaluation and the formulation of studies and projects, as well as public policy preparation and management.
The IICA Representative in Mexico, Gloria Abraham, and the Assistant Director General for Research and Collaboration at CIMMYT, Marianne Bänziger, stated that the joint efforts of both organizations will enable them to find appropriate spaces in order to duplicate food production.
“IICA and CIMMYT can complement their strengths and support the generation of more food for the next 40 or 50 years”, said Abraham.
Bänziger commented that CIMMYT has IICA as a partner in order to sustainably increase crop productivity systems in Mexico, since it possesses the basic tools to offer technical cooperation, can partner with others in management, and implement a cooperation agenda.
To this end, they will execute specific research and technology transfer projects related to production, management and improvement of systems for the production of corn and wheat in the short, medium and long term.
They will also exchange scientific personnel and will promote closer ties among the academic and scientific communities. Graduates will be produced, and conferences, courses, workshops, and academic events will be conducted.
