The community nursery and reforestation

Tiempo de lectura: 3 mins.

This is the first community nursery installed in Arreguy_Jacmel in 30 years.

More than 153.000 trees, 40% of them are fruit trees and the other 60% were forest species adapted to the area.

Haiti, December 17, 2014 (IICA). A community nursery was set up to produce fruit and forest tree saplings, and members of the community trained to operate it.

During the first phase of the project, more than 153,000 tree saplings were distributed. Around 40% of them were fruit trees (mango, avocado, citrus fruits, cherry and papaya), while the other 60% were forest species adapted to the area (cedar, oak, bayahonda, acacia and bamboo, among others).

The trees were distributed some time before the energy saving stoves, as families were required to plant at least 25 trees on their properties to be eligible to receive a stove.

The first to be established in the area in 30 years, the nursery is being used to train young people from the school run by the Missionary Sisters.
