IICA delivers half day workshop on fish processing

Tiempo de lectura: 3 mins.

The Aquaculture Unit was started in 2008 to produce tilapia fingerlings in an effort to promote backyard fish farming in rural areas.  The first tilapia produced were the Taiwan Red variety of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).  The unit now offers to the public “all male” fingerlings in an effort to drastically reduce unwanted reproduction of fingerlings in farmers’ ponds.  The Tilapia Hatchery Center, held a one day training that included food handler’s certification and a practical fish processing training.  The Technical Coordinator of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture delivered a half-day session on the steps involved during a fillet process for the staff of the THC and Agro processing Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture.  Twenty participants took part on the practical training which gave them the opportunity to learn skills on fish filleting.
