A select number of senior officials drawn from IICA Canada’s main stakeholder groups met recently in Ottawa to review the new programming plan for the institute and weigh in on potential focus areas for the Canadian Delegation.

IICA Canada Consultation, September 21, 2018

Ottawa, ON.  This was the first of a series of consultations organized by IICA Canada to share our organization’s new Medium Term Plan (MTP) for 2018 – 2022, and to obtain views on elements for including in its country strategy for Canada.

The group of 12 expressed concern regarding the pressures on the global agri-food system, and recognizing the diversity in the Americas, stressed the multi-faceted nature of the response needed. With the pillars of trade and development evident in the new MTP, participants provided perspectives on opportunities for collaboration based on their respective portfolios.  Promoting gender equity, engagement of the private sector and the adoption of appropriate technologies in Latin America and the Caribbean were some of the recurring themes throughout the facilitated discussions.

The contribution of a diverse range of players to solutions was acknowledged, and the role of IICA Canada in providing a space for on-going dialogue among relevant actors was encouraged.  The rich interchange provided actionable and practical recommendations.  The IICA Representative indicated that the group -which comprised public and private sector interests, academia and Non-Governmental Organizations, would be consulted on an on-going basis during the implementation of the new national strategy.
