IICA Representative in the DR participates in the Forum of Directors of Plant Protection in the Caribbean

IICA’s Representative in the country, Mr. Frank Lam, along with specialists from IICA, participates in the 10th Forum of Directors of Plant Protection in the Caribbean, which was developed at the Hotel Meliá Caribe Tropical in Bávaro, Dominican Republic.

The meeting was attended by 25 participating countries, which seek to improve sanitation and surveillance protocols in the region in order to protect natural resources and agricultural production from the threats of quarantine pests. In addition, to improve the plant health of the 25 participating countries, through the control and management of existing pests, expansion of production and trade in agricultural products, with a view to increasing food security, protecting the environment; and improve the quality of life and economic well-being of the population of the countries of the Caribbean region.

The activity was supported by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Dominican Republic, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Inter – American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

In addition, regional and international organizations participated in the Forum, such as: the International Regional Agency for Agricultural Health (OIRSA), the Center for International Cooperation in Agronomic Research for Development (CIRAD), the International Center for Bio-scientific Agriculture (CABI) Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CARICOM); The Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), the Caribbean Agricultural and Food Safety Agency (CAHFSA) and the Universities of Guyana and the West Indies.
