In compliance with Executive Order No. 27 (February 28th 2007), the IICA Delegation in the Dominican Republic held April  27th its accountability seminar 2016 with the presence of the he Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Angel Estévez and other senior officials of the official institution as well as representatives of dozens of public and private sector institutions linked to the agricultural sector, including the main donors, technical and financing agencies of the agricultural sector with representation in the Dominican Republic. The event was held at the Crowne Plaza Santo Domingo Hotel, with a wide press coverage.

During the event, the Minister of Agriculture addressed those participants, expressing his appreciation for the extraordinary work of cooperation developed by IICA, highlighting the recognition of the Ministry of Agriculture, among other cooperation activities, the ostensible achievements of the cooperation agency in the following topics: Beekeeping Development Project; Project of Production of Fish with Natural Food; Project of Production of Tayota and the Project for the Promotion of the Establishment in the country of Silvopastoral Systems. All of these projects carried out by IICA  and funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), making a contribution to the Ministry of Agriculture through the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development (MEPyD).

The Minister of Agriculture who requested from IICA and other international technical cooperation agencies the support and cooperation to facilitate the elaboration and implementation of a large comprehensive bilateral project on agricultural health and food safety with Haiti, the potential danger and risk that both countries face on the disease Moniliasis (Monilliopthora roreri) in cocoa plantations. He emphasized the importance of both countries meet “face-to-face” in designing harmonized strategies, plans and projects, with a focus on finding appropriate solutions to common problems that may affect the island in the agricultural field.

Mr. Frank Lam, for his part, referred to the happy coincidence of the celebration of the 75th anniversary of IICA, with the almost 50 years of establishment of the IICA Delegation in the Dominican Republic. Mr. Lam also presented the IICA operative structure as well as its institutional policy and strategy in order to offer its technical cooperation services to its member countries, reporting on the nature and scope of the IICA Strategic Plan for the period 2010-2020 and the Medium Term Plan 2014 – 2018. He also referred to the IICA Country Strategy and the fact that it had been developed in line with the National Development Strategy 2010-2030.

Mr. Frank Lam summarized the development of all the activities carried out by the institution during  2016, informing that during that productive year IICA had implemented 14 projects, benefiting from the development of the actions 22 provinces of the country and pointing out that more than 3,000 public and private sector technicians as well as leading producers benefited from various training and training activities. About 75 professionals participated in international events and forums and informed that by the year 2016 a total of 17 professionals and technicians had already received the benefit of their participation in the scholarship program for masters and doctorates under the IICA-CONACYT scholarship program. He concluded by pointing out that this is proof that IICA’s motto: “Results, our commitment” is not mere rhetoric.
