IICA Delegation participates in the Mango Fair in Bani, Peravia

In response to a request from the Mango Cluster in the Dominican Republic, Mr. Frank Lam, IICA Representative in the Dominican Republic gave the presentation: “Niches and New Markets for Mango in the Dominican Republic” in the cycle of conferences of the Mango Fair, from June 9th to 12th in Bani, Peravia.

In response to a request from the Mango Cluster in the Dominican Republic, Mr. Frank Lam, IICA Representative in the Dominican Republic gave the presentation: “Niches and New Markets for Mango in the Dominican Republic” in the cycle of conferences of the Mango Fair, from June 9th to 12th in Bani, Peravia.

During his intervention, Mr. Lam emphasized the importance of focusing on the fruit quality, as the US market and the EU are demanding the product throughout the year, and there is the possibility of introducing new varieties of mango and the organoleptic characteristics of the new varieties are becoming more important for the consumers. He also stressed that good management must start at the farm level that is critical for achieving a quality product.

There are new segments or niche markets that are demanding new attributes to fresh produce and at the same time, he said that over 90% of export mango is fresh so should be explored new ways to add value to the exportation of mangoes.

Coordination between IICA and Panamanian and U.S. government authorities bolsters the fight against New World screwworm in Central America and Mexico

As part of the efforts to curb the spread of the New World screwworm (NWS), a current health threat in Central America and Mexico, the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) of Panama, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Panama-United States Commission for the Eradication and Prevention of Screwworm (COPEG) organized a meeting with livestock farmers in the city of Santa Fé de Darién to strengthen health surveillance and better protect local livestock production.
