The artist has joined IICA’s campaign to heighten political and social awareness about the agriculture sector and rurality during this era of Covid-19.
San Jose, 15 May 2020 (IICA). Guadalupe Urbina, Costa Rican popular singer and artist, has come on board the campaign of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) to recognize workers in the agrifood chain, who, through their work, are ensuring that the people of the Americas have food on their tables during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Guadalupe’s songs are inspired by her cultural roots, life experiences and childhood memories. Her work portrays the stories of rural farming communities—in their homes and on the land—capturing events that speak to peace and justice.
In 1994, she was awarded the Premio Gaviota from Madrid’s Círculo de Bellas Artes for her work in oral narrative and the following year was recognized by Radio France, which bestowed her with the American Discovery Award.
In joining the IICA campaign, Guadalupe Urbina is following in the footsteps of a series of renowned artists from across the Americas who are selflessly participating in the POPULAR MUSIC TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO WORK DAY TO DAY TO PUT FOOD ON OUR TABLES.
Through the campaign, IICA is seeking to direct greater political and social attention to those who keep the agroindustrial chain functioning, as well as to the farmers who are guaranteeing our food supply at a time when the Covid-19 pandemic is challenging the world.
Adriana Varela, Gilberto Gil, León Gieco, Adriana Calcanhotto, Carlinhos Brown, Gustavo Santaolalla, Adriana Calcanhoto, Mart’nália, Maria Luiza Jobim, Tony Belloto, Paulo Miklos, Erika Ender, Grupo JAYAC, Teresa Parodi, Soledad Villamil, Víctor Heredia, Hilda Lizarazu, Lidia Borda, Gustavo Grobocopatel, La Charo (Tonolec), Willy Piancioli (Los Tipitos), Agustín Ronconi (Arbolito), Alejandro Davio (Mundo Alas), Anabella Zoch, Peteco Carabajal, Dolores Solá, Acho Estol (La Chicana), Ana Prada and Pata Kramer are just some of the performers who have selflessly and generously contributed to the campaign.

Several organizations in various countries have lent their support to this tribute spearheaded by IICA. In Argentina, the tribute has received the backing of the country’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries; the Ministry of Culture of the Nation; the Ministry of Social Development; the anti-hunger program – Plan Argentina contra el Hambre; the Secretariat of Media and Public Communication; the public broadcast entity, Contenidos Públicos Sociedad del Estado and the arts foundation, Fondo Nacional de las Artes.
On the other hand, in Brazil, UNESCO Brazil and the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (ABRAS) have both endorsed and become a part of this campaign.
