A meeting to coordinate the shared work took place during a visit of the Ambassador of Costa Rica to Argentina, Ginette Campos Rojas, in the northern province of Jujuy, accompanied by representatives of IICA in Argentina.
Buenos Aires, 22 March 2022 (IICA)–The Argentine province of Jujuy, the Embassy of Costa Rica in Argentina and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), with the participation of civil society organizations, advanced a joint agenda of projects concerning climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies and also projects related to women’s rights and gender identity.
A meeting to coordinate the shared work took place during a visit of the Ambassador of Costa Rica to Argentina, Ginette Campos Rojas, in the northern province of Jujuy, accompanied by representatives of IICA in Argentina.
Also in attendance were Fundación ProNorte, which has over twelve years of experience coordinating actions in northern Argentina, the Gran Chaco Americano and the Area of Integration of Central West South America (ZICOSUR), as well as the NGO Conciencia, which works in social issues.
Jujuy stands out for the vitality of its native peoples and has a broad production sector, including sugar, livestock, fruit and vegetables, tobacco and tourism.
The visit from the Ambassador of Costa Rica to Jujuy occurred as part of the commemoration of International Women’s Day and included a discussion on issues faced by rural women, with the participation of Celeste Valero, a weaver from the Quebrada de Humahuaca and creator of the identitary brand Qenqo, a social, environmentally-friendly business; Lorena Romina Martínez, Vice-Chair of the carnival troupe Comparsa los Alegres de Uquía; Bety Lucio and María Eva Soto, representatives of the Guaraní communities and promoters of the Guaraní language with a gender focus; and Eusebia Alarcón, a leading teacher in Casira and a potter.
There was also a stunning photographic exhibition of rural women workers in Argentina (in Jujuy and other provinces), Brazil, Guatemala and Jamaica, which was published in the Brazilian and Mexican editions of Vogue magazine.
This initiative was the result of an unprecedented partnership with IICA, which had the support of local governments, NGOs and businesses, as part of a shared commitment to giving visibility to the key role that rural women play in development.
The activities saw the participation of Pablo Palomares, Secretary for Regional Integration and International Relations of Jujuy; Alejandra Martínez, the President of the Provincial Council for Women and Gender Equality; María Inés Zigarán, the Minister of the Environment; National Senator Silvia Giacoppo; Ana Echeverri, IICA Specialist in Territorial Development and Welfare; and Liliana Paniagua, President of the Fundación ProNorte.
