IICA and the Latin American Poultry Association launch a guide to promote international trade in the region’s poultry products

San José, May 27, 2024 (IICA). The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Latin American Poultry Association (ALA) have unveiled the “Guide to the Identification and Systematization of Information on International Trade Regulations for the Poultry Sector,” which identifies and contains a compilation of national regulations and provides important information about the marketing of poultry products in the region.

The guide was presented during the virtual event “Global trade in chicken meat: the challenge of exporting, trends and tools for developing an international presence,” in which the participants included Lloyd Day, Deputy Director General of IICA; Joaquín Fernández, President of ALA; Adriana Campos, an Institute trade specialist; Luis Rúa, Director of Markets at the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA); and experts in international trade and poultry regulations.

The objective of the guide launched with ALA is to support the development of the poultry sector in Latin America and the Caribbean, Day said.

“The potential of chicken meat exports in Latin America is important for the region’s economic development, and to guarantee the nutrition of the world’s population. The systematization of trade rules and science-based work are the tools needed to guarantee success,” he explained.

Joaquín Fernández emphasized the outlook for chicken production and marketing in Latin America is full of promise, which is why ALA promotes quality and sustainability in regional poultry products.

“We’re working to guarantee access to the region’s poultry products in the rest of the world. With this guide, we’re disseminating knowledge and promoting animal health and biosecurity on farms. We’re committed to supporting producers,” he added.

 

Boosting competitiveness through knowledge

The virtual meeting featured experts in international trade and poultry regulations, who discussed current challenges, market trends, and strategic tools that producers can use to expand their presence in international markets.

IICA’s Adriana Campos explained that the guide had been developed to provide exporters with easy, organized access to relevant national and multilateral regulations, which are crucial for the effective marketing of poultry products in the region.

According to the ABPA’s Luis Rúa, the world continues to be very demanding where chicken meat protein is concerned, and that situation is creating important opportunities for the Latin American nations. Producers must meet a series of key requirements in order to seize those opportunities, but the prospect of increasing their market presence and boosting their income makes the effort worthwhile.
