Ottawa, Canada, May 2026 – The 22nd ParlAmericas Plenary Assembly and 10th Gathering of the Open Parliament Network took place from May 20 to 22 in Ottawa, Canada, bringing together parliamentary delegations and experts from across the Americas and the Caribbean. The event was held under the theme “Parliamentary Leadership for Shared Prosperity: Advancing Trade, Innovation, and Security in a Changing World.”
As part of the program, Dr. Jean-Charles Le Vallée participated as a panelist in the session “The Trade-Security Nexus – Part 1: A Human Security Lens.” During his intervention, he shared perspectives on agricultural trade, food security and regional integration. He also highlighted the relationship between trade systems and key factors such as food access, affordability, supply stability and long-term resilience across the region.
During the session, Dr. Le Vallée referred to strategic initiatives being advanced by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) in support of food security, resilience and sustainable development. His participation helped connect discussions on trade and security with the realities of agri-food systems and the importance of keeping food security at the forefront of public policy across the Americas.
The event provided a high-level forum for dialogue on the challenges and opportunities facing the Hemisphere. The Assembly underscored the importance of cooperation, innovation and evidence-based policymaking in addressing increasingly complex economic, social and geopolitical realities.
Through its technical cooperation and partnerships across the Hemisphere, IICA remains committed to supporting efforts that strengthen food security, promote sustainable agricultural development and enhance the resilience of rural communities throughout the Americas.
