At the event, details were given of the progress of the Living Soils Initiative in the Americas, carried out by IICA together with the scientist Rattan Lal, considered the world's leading authority on the subject and one of the speakers at this event.

The institution, which has members in Canada and Mexico, as well as the United States, has been working assiduously to develop greenhouse gas inventories and other tools to provide precise and verifiable information about the environmental footprint of meat production and industry. In this way it is demonstrating its commitment to the climate change mitigation and adaptation goals assumed by the international community under the 2015 Paris Agreement.

During a panel organized by the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU) of the United States, Bayer and IICA, Vilsack capitalized on the presence of the other ministers of Agriculture of the Americas to underscore the importance of the region for the planet’s food and nutrition security.

The Secretary of Agriculture and Livestock of Honduras, Laura Suazo, had a very active participation in the 28th edition of the COP, the largest climate negotiation forum in the world organized annually by the UN, where she brought the voice and demands of Central America and the Caribbean to facilitate and accelerate access to funds to finance faster adaptation of farmers to the new scenarios caused by climate change.

The Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay, Fernando Mattos, stated that agriculture is recovering the space that it never properly occupied in global climate discussions, and praised the efforts of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), a hemispheric organization specializing in agricultural and rural development, to promote the presence of the agricultural sector in the main global forums for environmental negotiation, such as the COP.

The Secretaries of Agriculture of the United States and Mexico made a joint appearance at COP28, agreeing that the Americas should be a world leader in agrifood production innovation, in order to strengthen the role of the sector as part of the solution to climate change.

The collective action of the nations of the Americas at the Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai, the main forum for global negotiations to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change, will allow the countries of the region to achieve better results and implement the urgent tasks required to increase the sustainability of agriculture and protect water and soil.
