Climate smart agriculture in the Eastern Caribbean States: A compendium of stories from farmers

A new publication highlighting successful experiences with climate smart agriculture(CSA) in the Eastern Caribbean States (ECS) was just released.  The document presents 13 case studies of experiences with CSA in the region, identified through a regional competition that IICA and its partners held in 2016 through the Caribbean Climate Smart Agriculture Forum.

Each case included in the publication clearly identifies the climate risks that the farmers sought to address, the different technologies and practices they implemented and the contributions made to each of the three pillars of climate-smart agriculture: adaptation, food security, and mitigation. It also provides a conceptual overview for CSA in the region, and summarizes the lessons that can be gleaned from efforts to date.

The publication can be accessed here.

Additionally, three short videos were produced to highlight the three regional winners:

· Saint Lucia

· Antigua and Barbuda

· Grenada

It is clear that while many actors are taking proactive steps to help address climate change in the agricultural sector, significant challenges remain. In the ECS, additional research is needed to determine the synergies and trade-offs of each set of practices in terms of their contribution to each of the three pillars of CSA.  More data needs to be collected to enable a more comprehensive understanding of the impacts of the different practices being implemented, and capacity development is required to enable more producers to implement adaptation measures.
