A training organized by IICA, GIZ and EUROCLIMA promotes the idea that the implementation of coordinated actions among IICA specialists will better able the countries to respond to the challenges of climate change.

The training, held at IICA Headquarters, was attended by specialists from 18 IICA Offices.

San Jose. Twenty specialists from a number of Offices of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) recently learned more about the adaptation of agriculture to climate change, with a view to improving the technical assistance the Institute provides to its member countries.

The course, attended by specialists from 18 IICA Offices, was taught by Andrea Schloenvoigt, a consultant from the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ), and two IICA specialists in the fields of agriculture and climate change, Kelly Witkowski and Kattia Fajardo.

According to David Williams, Principal Specialist for Resilience and Comprehensive Risk Management in Agriculture, the goal of the course was to foster the articulation of regional initiatives directed at addressing the challenges of climate change as they apply to agriculture in the Americas.

“IICA is committed to supporting its member countries in their efforts to design, implement and monitor actions aimed at enabling the agricultural sector to adapt to and recover from the effects of climate change. This course provided an opportunity for local IICA technical personnel to share the experience with others and learn more about this phenomenon and the actions being taken in different countries,” said Williams.

The course, held at IICA Headquarters, brought together specialists from Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay y Venezuela.

It comprised both practical and conceptual modules, videos and presentations, as well as sessions to reflect on the lessons learned from the participating countries.

The course has better enabled IICA to provide its member countries with technical cooperation that is more coordinated, through its Flagship Projects, and to take the lead in efforts aimed at adapting agriculture to climate change.
