Se comprometieron a contribuir al aumento de la resiliencia y la capacidad de respuesta que la región necesita a fin de estar mejor preparada para responder a crisis futuras.
Los Angeles, 14 June 2022 (IICA) – In a joint declaration issued at the Ninth Summit of the Americas, held last week in Los Angeles, USA, senior officials of the institutions that are members of the Joint Summit Working Group (JSWG) reaffirmed their commitment to support the post-pandemic agenda for the recovery of the Americas, and the efforts to build a sustainable, resilient, and equitable future.
The document that was signed acknowledges the urgent need to redouble efforts to address, in an effective, comprehensive, and coordinated manner, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Americas —the region of the world hardest hit by the virus—, as well as the uncertainties of the regional political and fiscal context. The aim is to promote a collective agenda and strengthen collaboration among international organizations and relevant stakeholders, with a view to fully implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the hemisphere.
Specifically, the agencies concerned pledged to help increase the resilience and response capacity of the region, so it is better prepared to respond to future crises.
Furthermore, they agreed to enhance coordination and collaboration among the JSWG’s partner institutions in order to support the implementation of, and follow-up to, the hemispheric agenda adopted at the Ninth Summit, and to optimize technical cooperation, effective program execution, and the efficient use of resources, with a view to avoiding any overlap and duplication in the partners’ work, increasing financing opportunities for the countries of the region, and ensuring the coherent implementation of the commitments assumed at the Summit.
In the joint declaration, the partners also agreed to provide technical assistance to the governments with the drafting of the action plans called for as part of the Summit’s Political Commitments and their timely implementation, to enable governments to move from commitments to policies and action for the recovery and reconstruction of the Americas.
The Joint Summit Working Group is made up of the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (GS/OAS), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the World Bank, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the International Labor Organization (ILO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), and the Secretariat of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development ( OECD).
Its work consists of providing technical guidance to countries for the identification and negotiation of the issues addressed via the Summit Process. The JSWG also plans and carries out projects and initiatives designed to implement Summit commitments and supports the Ministerial Meetings and their links to the Summit Process. In addition, the group participates in Summit Policy Dialogues, a mechanism for sharing ideas with respect to policy approaches within the Summit Process.
