The Delegation of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture in Guyana hosted a webinar to raise awareness of best practices, by promoting and supporting climate change actions, while providing a space for dialogue among relevant actors and allowing them to discuss the challenges and successes of Caribbean Smart Agriculture.
The Delegation of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture in Guyana hosted a webinar to raise awareness of best practices, by promoting and supporting climate change actions, while providing a space for dialogue among relevant actors and allowing them to discuss the challenges and successes of Caribbean Smart Agriculture.
The session, entitled “Initiatives Supporting the Implementation of Climate Change Goals: Opportunities for the Caribbean agricultural sector”, forms part of the Caribbean Climate Smart Agriculture (CCSA) Forum. Four more are expected to be organized in 2017.
This forum attracted an audience of technical officers from the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry of the University of Guyana, the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute, the Civil Defence Commission, the Environment Protection Agency, the Office of Climate Change, the Ministry of Agriculture’s Hydroment and Fisheries Departments and the CARICOM Secretariat.
Two presentations were made during the event: John Furlow, from the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Global Network, spoke on advances since the Paris Climate Agreement and on several mechanisms to support climate action. Pankaj Bhatia from the NDC Partnership spoke on National Determined Contributions for climate change.
The NDC Partnership is a global initiative to help countries achieve their national climate commitments and ensure that financial and technical assistance is delivered as efficiently as possible. The NAP Global Network is a group of individuals and institutions working to enhance national adaptation planning and action in developing countries. This group utilises NDC’s and NAP’s to advance Climate Resilient Development.
The webinar facilitated local discussion on how the local agriculture can participate in and support Guyana’s National Determined Contributions, what technical support is needed, and possibilities for engagement in the NAP-Global Network or the NDC partnership.
