A series of virtual forums will provide women throughout the hemisphere with a platform to discuss the effects of the pandemic and develop strategies that foster equity.

San Jose, 7 May 2020 (IICA) – Rural women involved in food production and marketing in the Americas will come together through a series of virtual forums entitled “Rural Women and Equity During the COVID-19 Pandemic.” The participants will discuss the challenges and needs they are facing as a result of the current pandemic.

Organized by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the forums seek to shed light on the ways in which rural women are dealing with the effects of Covid-19 and the implications of the current health crisis.

The rural women participating in the forums will share their perspectives on and experiences conducting a wide range of activities related to agriculture, rural tourism and handicraft production, among other areas.

Based on the experiences shared, IICA will develop technical cooperation proposals and actions, to drive the sector’s recovery after the pandemic.

The Institute will organize a total of four regional forums and one hemispheric forum, on May 13, 14 and 19.

“The experiences shared by rural women are crucial to understanding the severity of the pandemic’s impact and the effectiveness of strategies developed to overcome the crisis in agriculture and other activities that are crucial to the well-being of rural areas," stated Manuel Otero, Director General of IICA.

Renowned leaders of the agriculture, academic and government sectors will participate in the forums, which will be open to the public and hosted on IICA’s new Virtual Conference Room. The forums will also be broadcast on IICA’s social networking sites.

Each of the five forums will have a duration of 90 minutes and will be carried out as follows (all times are local Costa Rica time):

  • Caribbean Region, the United States, Canada and Belize: 13 May, 8:30 a.m.
  • Southern Region: 13 May, 11 a.m.
