Buenos Aires / San José, 24 May 2021 (IICA) – The future of agrifood systems and the possible impact of the Food Systems Summit convened by the UN on production methods of Argentina and the region will be discussed at the 8th Symposium “From the South to the World”, to be held on Wednesday 26 May.
This virtual, free-access meeting is organized by the School of Agronomy of the Universidad de Buenos Aires (FAUBA), the Center for Federal Development Studies Foundation (CEDEF) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), with the support of public and private institutions involved in agricultural production.
The challenges associated with the 2021 Food Systems Summit, convened by the United Nations (UN), as well as other international events such as the Climate Change Conference that will be held in Glasgow, will be at the center of the discussion. These global events are expected to transform agrifood systems and produce new agreements, commitments and collaborative actions between the countries regarding food production.
“It is crucial for countries and farmers in the Americas to make their voices heard at the Food Systems Summit” said Caio Rocha, IICA Representative in Argentina and Regional Coordinator for the Southern Region, who will be one of the speakers at the event.
“The agrifood systems of the region are at a point of no return in their transformation towards more sustainable production methods from an economic, social and environmental perspective. As a major global net food exporter, the hemisphere will play a key role in post-pandemic recovery, and must engage in joint, coordinated actions within the global debate”, he added.
IICA is part of the Summit’s Champions Network –comprised of a group of individuals and organizations committed to fulfilling its objectives– in representation of the agricultural and rural sectors of North America, Latin America and the Caribbean.
One of the speakers who will be participating in the symposium is María del Carmen Squeff, Permanent Representative of Argentina to the UN and member of the Advisory Committee to the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy, Agnes Kalibata, who is overseeing the organization of the Summit.
Other speakers include Fernando Vilella, Director of the Bioeconomy Program of the School of Agronomy of UBA; Santiago Nocelli Pac, Consultant at the Knowledge Management Unit of the UN Green Climate Fund; IICA’s Director General, Manuel Otero; IICA’s Representative in Brazil, Gabriel Delgado; Federico Trucco, CEO of Bioceres Crop Solutions; and the Director of Technical Cooperation of IICA, Federico Villarreal.
The topics covered in the symposium will be: the major global summits of 2021 and the Millennium Goals; the main pillars of the Food Systems Summit; new global consumers; the acceleration of trends as a result of the pandemic; bioeconomy can be part of the solution; carbon-positive agriculture and livestock; strategies to eradicate malnutrition in the most vulnerable sectors of the region; and the regional interest in future summits.
