Ottawa, June 12, 2014 (IICA). Lloyd Day, Deputy Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) visited Ottawa recently and met with Dr. Bruce Archibald, President of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). On the heels of the endorsement of the Institute’s new Medium Term Plan (2014 – 2018), Mr. Day engaged the agency head on the strategy being adopted by the hemispheric institute for a more productive and competitive agriculture in the Americas.

Dr. Archibald acknowledged the valuable work of the Institute in the Americas, as well as the meaningful collaborative efforts with his organization over the years. This set the stage for focussed discussions on areas for future co-operation.

Using 4 flagship projects as the vehicles for effecting selected transformations in agriculture, IICA identified several areas of mutual interest with the Canadian agency. Both organizations acknowledged the importance of implementing interventions which would lead to sustained desirable changes.

High on the work agenda for the two organizations were initiatives to foster Science-based, risk management principles for predictable trade. Public-private partnerships were cited as providing a useful mechanism for advancing on several fronts.

Other participants in the meeting included the IICA Canada Representative, Dr. Audia Barnett, as well as senior staff members of the CFIA.
