Washington, DC – September 13, 2024 (Wilson Center/IICA): The Wilson Center’s Brazil Institute is pleased to announce a private dialogue event, Farming Forward: Strategic Approaches to Sustainable Agriculture, featuring Silvia Maria Fonseca Silveira Massruhá, President of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), and Roberto Perosa, Brazil’s Secretary of Commerce and International Relations at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA). The event will take place at the Wilson Center on September 20, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM ET.

As Brazil and the United States together produce a quarter of the world’s food supply, this dialogue is timely and essential. The meeting will explore Brazil’s groundbreaking innovations in sustainable agriculture and their critical role in enhancing climate resilience. Additionally, it will provide insights into MAPA’s strategic international collaborations that promote sustainable agricultural practices globally.

This event also marks the launch of the Wilson Center’s Latin America Sustainable Agriculture Initiative, a hemispheric effort aimed at fostering sustainable food production across the Americas. The initiative seeks to bolster global food security while reducing environmental impacts, such as deforestation and carbon and methane emissions.

In partnership with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the Wilson Center’s initiative supports the development of advanced agricultural technologies and the formulation of public policies that incentivize sustainable practices. This is vital as Latin America faces significant challenges stemming from biodiversity loss and climate change, which threaten agricultural productivity.

The Wilson Center’s Sustainable Agriculture Initiative leverages independent research, policy programs, and cross-sector collaborations to bring together policymakers, scholars, and private sector leaders committed to addressing these pressing global challenges.
