IICA held a new online meeting with experts and authorities on agriculture and environment in the Americas to analyze with member countries how regional agriculture can play an active role in climate change solutions in the context of global negotiations.

The meeting at IICA Headquarters in Costa Rica will be held from 29 to 31 March and will include a conference with the region’s main airlines on fuels and the environment and a seminar entitled “Sustainable Mobility: Ethanol Talks Costa Rica”.

Ethanol Talks, the high-level event organized by the Brazilian government and biofuel industry, has previously been held in Brazil, Argentina, Guatemala and India. The Costa Rica edition will be on 31 March.

Under Secretary Taylor and Otero also touched on the subject of gender and the Director General invited Taylor to the Forum of Female Ministers and Deputy Ministers of Agriculture of the Americas, which will meet again this year.

The ministers and secretaries of agriculture of the member countries pledged to continue promoting the development of sustainable practices and technologies and, in particular, to disseminate already existing, effective regional technologies that make production systems more resilient and facilitate adaptation to climate-related challenges.

The contest will be open from 1 February to 16 June 2023. Awards will be given to the following categories: producers’ associations and other private-sector organizations, including NGOs, that work with LAC producers; LAC science and technology institutions and organizations; and the LAC public sector (at all levels).

Harden’s passion for agriculture started when she was a girl, growing up on her family’s peanut farm in the southern state of Georgia. She has come a long way since then in private sector work and public service, taking her to the highest levels of decision-making and responsibility. For instance, she was Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for three years.

At a meeting with IICA Director General Manuel Otero and IICA’s Representative in Mexico, Diego Montenegro Ernst, SENASICA Director in Chief Javier Calderón Elizalde said that the partnership has been vital in protecting the agriculture sector in Mexico and throughout the Americas, and in strengthening the safe production and trade of healthy and safe foods.
