Countries express broad support for IICA’s renewed roadmap to address global food security challenges

Ministers and representatives of more than 20 countries in the Americas who participated in the Forty-second Regular Meeting of the Executive Committee of IICA agreed that, in order to guarantee the continuity of technical cooperation of excellence, it is crucial to correctly interpret the current scenario, which shines the spotlight on the hemisphere’s role as a guarantor of the planet’s food, nutritional and environmental security.

Ministers of Africa and the Americas to hold first summit to enhance cooperation on agrifood issues

The meeting, to be held on 27, 28 and 29 July in Costa Rica, will outline the role of Africa and the Americas in global food and environmental security. It will provide opportunities for bi-regional cooperation in science, technology and innovation, with a view to building resilient and sustainable food systems.

Cooperative member Chito Quintero, a role model for peasant and indigenous communities in Panama, recognized by IICA as a “Leader of Rurality”

Quintero, who forms part of the Ngäbe-Buglé indigenous community, lost his mother at the age of 6 and had to work from an early age to support his siblings. He became a union leader shortly after becoming a banana farmer, and in 1991, he co-founded the banana cooperative Cooperativa de Servicios Múltiples Bananera del Atlántico (COOBANA), which currently has 220 members and more than 600 workers.

Commonwealth Secretariat and IICA strengthen efforts to boost food security in the Caribbean

Through this collaboration, both organisations aim to support Commonwealth Caribbean countries to better leverage digitalisation for increased food production, to achieve agricultural and fisheries development, including trade and investment, and rural well-being across the region.

Argentina and IICA join forces to cooperate with Haiti
