In these 50 years of uninterrupted institutional presence, IICA has contributed to agricultural development and rural well-being in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, February 2018 (IICA). The Dominican Republic Delegation of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) celebrates fifty (50) years of uninterrupted institutional presence in the country this year. During this period, IICA has contributed enormously to agricultural development and rural well-being in the Dominican Republic, focusing its actions on four strategic objectives:

⦁    Improve the productivity and competitiveness of the agricultural sector.
⦁    Strengthen the contribution of agriculture to the development of territories and rural well-being.
⦁    Improve the capacity of agriculture to mitigate and to adapt to climate change and make better use of natural resources.
⦁    Improve the contribution of agriculture to food security.

The IICA presence in the Dominican Republic since 1968 has its origin in the offer made by the Inter-American Institute of Agricultural Sciences (former name) to the Dominican Republic, through the Ministry of Agriculture, to establish an official Subregional Representation in Santo Domingo, to attend the services of IICA in the Dominican Republic and other countries of the Antilles members of the Institute and the Technical Nucleus, and to develop activities related to the Agricultural Teaching programs in the country, as well as Agricultural Research, Rural Development and Agrarian Reform.

In order to formalize and facilitate the fulfillment of the aforementioned purposes, and based on the Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS), on February 9, 1968, IICA and the Dominican Government signed a Basic Agreement on the Privileges and Immunities of the Institute, effective through Official Gazette No. 9765, of August 15, 1989, which empowers the institution, as an international legal entity, to enter into agreements and contracts throughout the territory of the Dominican Republic.

These 50 years have earned IICA in the Dominican Republic a high level of prestige and a position among stakeholders in the agricultural sector, as the preferred cooperation agency in agricultural development and rural well-being. Our main strength is the technical capabilities and the permanent presence of IICA in the hemisphere, through the Headquarters and the Delegations in its 34 member countries.
