Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, January 2019 (IICA). During the first days of January, Mr. Frank Lam, IICA Representative in the Dominican Republic, presented a technical cooperation proposal for the institutional strengthening of the Ministry of Agriculture to Juan José Espinal, Deputy Minister of Agricultural Sector Planning. This proposal was presented in the framework of the support actions for 2019 of the IICA Delegation in the Dominican Republic to promote the development of the agricultural sector.

This proposal focuses on strengthening the Ministry of Agriculture’s institutional structure through knowledge management of its technical personnel in topics such as value chains, market access, agricultural health and food safety. On the one hand, the proposal includes training programs to increase the skills of agricultural technicians and producers for the successful development of crops. A second aspect of the proposal focuses on strengthening capacities to improve Veterinary Services (SV), Phytosanitary Protection (FP) and Food Safety (AI) through the creation and improvement of skills to the technical staff of the services.

With this proposal, IICA reaffirms its commitment to increase the competitiveness of Dominican agricultural products, boost integration into export markets and to promote the well-being of agricultural producers living in rural territories.
