The hemispheric action programs are the main institutional mechanism through which IICA coordinates and integrates its technical cooperation and knowledge management actions
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, October 2018 (IICA). The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) approved the 2018-2022 Medium Term Plan (MTP), a document that establishes the guidelines for the technical cooperation that the Institute will provide in agricultural matters over the next four years. The new institutional action plan prioritizes agricultural activity and rural development in the region.
To this end, it has established five hemispheric action programs which will serve as a guide for the preparation of projects and initiatives in the 34 Member States: Program 1: Bioeconomy and Production Development, Program 2: Territorial Development and Family Farming, Program 3: International Trade and Regional Integration, Program 4: Climate Change, Natural Resources and Management of Production Risks, and Program 5: Agricultural Health, Safety and Food Quality.
In order to implement the 2018-2022 Medium Term Plan in the Dominican Republic, IICA initiated the execution of two projects within the framework of Program 3: International Trade and Regional Integration and the Program 4: Climate Change, Natural Resources and Management of Production Risks.
The first project deals with sustainable business management and insertion into the markets of agricultural chains of the Dominican Republic, whose activities are focused to identify training needs to improve the capacities of producers to link themselves to the export markets. The project also aims to elaborate a IICA’s technical cooperation proposal to support companies and / or organizations supported by the Special Fund for Agricultural Development (FEDA) and the Dominican Agribusiness Board (JAD) through the Rural Economic Development Support Program (PRORURAL).
The second project, “Technical support for the institutional strengthening of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in disaster risk management,” aims to provide technical cooperation to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources for its institutional strengthening in disaster risk management in order to properly implement and execute the risk management policy established in Law 147-02 on Risk Management.
Likewise, these projects seek to contribute to the efforts made by the Dominican Republic to achieve the objectives established in Law 1-12, which establishes the National Development Strategy (END 2030) and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.
