Multi-sectoral management support program of water and soil in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican government under a new initiative called the four-year of water, declared as a cornerstone of the government program for 2016-2020, organizes an Inter-institutional Technical Group for its implementation, and has formed the National Soil Conservation Service.

The Dominican government under a new initiative called the four-year of water, declared as a cornerstone of the government program for 2016-2020, organizes an Inter-institutional Technical Group for its implementation, and has formed the National Soil Conservation Service. In response to demands by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, FAO-RD has met key partners such as IICA and the World Bank to create a unified and catalytic support platform to increase governance with a watershed approach, strengthen structures and increase funding for initiatives in support of sustainable management of soil and water.

To catalyze actions a Technical Cooperation Program is requested to: (i) create an operating plan and funding proposal for a National Soil Conservation Service; (ii) training for extension; (iii) a National Plan of Action to date in support of the UNCCD and strengthening of the Technical Group Inter-Institutional and (iv) proposals for funding for Sustainable Livestock with carbon sequestration and action plans for the Ozama and Yaque North river basins two basins of high priority for the country.

Around this, the project ‘Catalyzing a multi-sector program support management of water and soil against the threat of climate change in the Dominican Republic’ is formulated to be accomplished during the period 2017-2018, in which institutions as the Ministry of Agriculture; Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources; National Institute of Water Resources will be strengthened structures to catalyze actions in support of sustainable management of soil and water.

The proposed actions are:

a) Strengthening the governance framework of watersheds nationwide, including the Ozama-Isabela.

b) Guiding the technical offer by the National Soil Conservation Service, leaving the agency with a clear operational strategy.

c) Channeling financing actions in support of sustainable soil and water management and sustainable livestock.
