Senior Plant Scientists met in Ottawa recently to discuss pests and diseases affecting crops such as potato and tomato in North America.
Ottawa, Canada. Recognizing the challenges associated with controlling movement of certain pests, the scientists met to share strategies for detecting and minimizing the deleterious impacts. Integrated Pest Management as well the use of modern diagnostic tools were areas that were flagged for addressing pests which cost countries worldwide significant amounts each year.
The meeting was facilitated by the trilateral agricultural network PROCINORTE, which comprises national agricultural research bodies in Mexico, USA and Canada, namely – Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones, Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias (INIFAP), United States Department of Agriculture- Agricultural Research Service (USDA- ARS) and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC). The Plant Health Task Force of PROCINORTE provides opportunities for knowledge sharing and conducting joint research between the 3 countries.
