Producers from the Dominican Republic carry out a technical visit of Costa Rica

This visit promoted an exchange of experiences between producers and technicians from the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica, associated in coffee, with the aim of strengthening capacities in associative, business and environmental issues

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, August 2019 (IICA). The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) within the framework of the Dominican Re-Publication Component of the Central American Program for the Integral Management of Coffee Rust, (PROCAGICA-RD) conducts a technical visit with coffee producers from The Dominican Republic in Costa Rica.

In this technical visit participated a representative of the Dominican Coffee Institute (INDOCAFE), a representative of the Association of Special Coffee Producers of Juncalito (ASOPROCAES), a representative of the Federation of Southern Coffee Growers (FEDECARES), two members of the Board of Directors of INDOCAFE and a member of the Project Coordinating Unit PROCAGICA-RD.

During the visit to Costa Rica, a tour was made at the Tropical Agronomic Center for Research and Education (CATIE), Turrialba, to evaluate the technological models of production and varieties of coffee. Regarding issues of associativity and cooperativism, a visit was made to Coopetarrazú, Coopevictoria R.L, Coopelibertad and micro benefits. A visit of Starbucks was also carried out at Alsace farm, where a meeting with the Director of Starbucks research was held to learn about the technological packages of the farm. The purpose of these meetings was to evaluate and discuss issues related to agrotourism, agribusiness and research and development. Finally, a visit was also made to the Costa Rican Coffee Institute (ICAFE) to learn about the public policy framework for coffee that Costa Rica adopts.
