It was gratifying to note the convergence of perspectives on the importance of the Canadian office as a bridge (to & from the rest of the Americas) with respect to knowledge, technologies and innovations.

Consultations were the order of the day for the Canadian office during the final quarter of the calendar year.  Covering geographic & thematic areas, and involving main stakeholder groups, peers and decision-makers, the sessions served to share information as well as garner views and recommendations on the implementation the Institute’s new Medium Term Plan (2018 – 2022).  It was gratifying to note the convergence of perspectives on the importance of the Canadian office as a bridge (to & from the rest of the Americas) with respect to knowledge, technologies and innovations. Recognizing that partnership engagement is vital, related initiatives with the private sector, not-for-profit organizations, and academia continued at a brisk pace, topped with the negotiation of 2 new cooperation agreements. All this was done without breaking the rhythm of the programmed technical cooperation agenda.   Requests for technical assistance from other IICA offices were addressed, in addition to organizing several technical symposia and attending as a participant in others.  The Office was also particularly pleased with the number and quality of applications received in response to the 2019 Call for Applications for the Research & Internship Assistance Program (RIAP) and appreciate the thorough job done by its selection committee.

As we come to the end of the year, kudos go to the human talent in the Office, team members who continue to demonstrate selfless commitment to the Institute’s mandate and values.  Notwithstanding the challenges that lie ahead, the Office in Canada remains motivated and encouraged!

Regional project implemented by IICA strengthens sweet potato cultivation in Caribbean countries

Efforts to strengthen sweet potato production and preserve vital genetic resources across the Caribbean are gaining momentum under the Next Generation Sweet Potato Production in the Caribbean Project, now actively engaging stakeholders through a Community of Practice with technical specialists in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Saint Lucia, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.
