made him recipient of an award in Nayarit, Mexico and Mr. Adrian Garcia-Casarrubias
during IICA Canada’s 2017 Annual meeting.

Two former recipients of IICA Canada’s funding for interns were recently awarded honours for their research.

Mr. Jesus Olivares Figueroa was awarded a second place prize by the Council of Science and Technology of the State of Nayarit and the Autonomous University of Nayarit in Mexico for his work relating to a non-destructive method of measuring mango maturity.  The prize was awarded at the 5th Meeting of Young Researchers, within the framework of the 2017 Nayarit’s Science, Technology and Innovation Congress, held on September 12th, 2017, at the facilities of the Autonomous University of Nayarit.

Jesus Figueroa is the recipient of a research internship provided by PROCINORTE, the network of national agricultural research organizations in Canada, the United States and Mexico, which is supported by IICA.  His research utilized the non-destructive technology being fine-tuned for avocado by the Tree Fruit Task Force.   The quality of Mexican mango varieties (Ataulfo and Tommy Atkins) was measured using spectroscopy.

We also want to congratulate Mr. Adrian Garcia-Casarrubias, who was also awarded the 2017-2018 Kirchner Food Fellowship.  Adrian is a Plant Biotechnology PhD candidate at CINVESTAV-IPN (Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute) in San Pedro Zacatenco, Mexico. He is also an entrepreneur and with his platform, INFOOD®, he is helping more than 200 small farmers in Mexico gain access to high value markets.

In 2015 Adrian was a recipient of one of the Agricultural Exchange Grants provided by IICA Canada’s Research and Internship Assistance Program (RIAP).  He contributed as a panel member in a discussion, “Engaging Youth Today to Feed the World Tomorrow”, and provided his perspective on the challenges regarding generational replacement in Latin America.

We congratulate both and wish them continued success in their future endeavours.
