Taro, also known as malanga in some Latin American countries, has been key lately to diversify the agriculture of this island country.

The main goal of the debates is to forge alliances in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. The event is attended by government officials, private sector representatives, international organizations, agricultural producers, academics, scientists, educators and students.

The first major eruption of La Soufriere Volcano was last April and since then there have been thirty-two others. Approximately 20,000 people were evacuated from their homes, most of whom were farmers, given that the lands adjoining the volcano are used primarily for agriculture.

Microfinance Consultant Monica Rogers-Fletcher, based in Trinidad and Tobago engaged a Team of Consultants from Dominica and Guyana to develop a Gender Based Micro Financing Mechanism as a key product for the UNDP/IICA project, Strengthening Disaster Management Capacity of Women in the Commonwealth of Dominica. This project is expected to attract new levels of interest from rural women in the agriculture sector to engage and invest in productive activities and alternative livelihoods.
