A new project of support for the coffee sector in the Dominican Republic

A new project to support the Dominican coffee sector was signed on Friday 25 November under the Central American Program for Integrated Coffee Management (PROCAGICA Regional). This program, funded by the European Union, responds to the demand of the Heads of State and Government of Central America and the Dominican Republic on the incidence of Coffee Rust disease (Hemileia vastatrix) and is consistent with the mandate of the Central America Integration System (SICA) on issues of agriculture, environment and integration policies.

Hugging is the answer!

No doubt - one of the highlights of the Grow Canada16 Conference was the Keynote presentation by renowned marketing consultant and speaker, Jay Baer.  Author of book "Hug your Haters", Jay’s challenge to persons involved in food and agriculture was to defy expectations, confidently responding to naysayers.  Considering that consumers often do not have sufficient information to know what they want, (according to credible studies), scientists and technologists have a great opportunity to package and present relevant information for decision making at every level.

Project Specialist from Headquarters visits the Delegation

Vanessa Zamora visited the Delegation in Canada from her home office in IICA headquarters during the week of the October 17 - 21 with the goal of supporting the delegation in project management. Staff appreciated her contribution to their efforts in managing the FonCT project "Enhancing Value-added opportunities of small cocoa producers in Peru and Dominican Republic".

Global Nutrition Report Launch

The McGill Centre for the Convergence of Health and Economics (MCCHE), in conjunction with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and the Micronutrient Initiative (MI), launched the 2016 Global Nutrition Report (GNR) in November with an engaging panel and a backdrop of exciting food  start-ups. The GNR was however sobering. It underscored the stark realities regarding malnutrition security facing many in the world. Even in Canada, it was recognized that obesity, micronutrient deficiency, and nutrient-related non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers have affected millions of individuals and produced significant social and economic costs.

A member of IICA’s delegation in Canada attended the November 28 – 29, 2016, Canadian Food & Drink Summit 2016, hosted by the Conference Board’s Centre for Food in Canada (CFIC) in Toronto Ontario. The two-day event provided an opportunity to explore the future of Canada’s food sector, and to leverage new opportunities to enhance the food sector’s performance—both provincially and globally.

Jamaican Small Ruminant Association Mission to Canada

A mission aimed to strengthen relationships and promote future collaboration between Jamaica and Canada in the area of Small Ruminant genetics was organized by IICA Canada in collaboration with IICA Jamaica, Mr. Robert Lang from Rural Routes international, Grasshill Genetics and the Canadian Livestock Genetics Association (CLGA) Small Ruminant members. Participants of the week-long mission comprised the President of Jamaica’s Small ruminant Association, Mr. Kenneth King, Vice President Mr. Devon Sayers and associated member Mr. Terrence Johnson.

Representative’s Corner – 4th Quarter of 2016

Year end is always embraced with gusto as we all look forward to the holidays.  It is also a time to ensure that deadlines for activities, reports and expenditures are met.  As a result, the Delegation in Canada was engaged in a plethora of actions.
