IICA names Gillian Goddard a ā€œLeader of Ruralityā€ for her work to empower small farmers in Trinidad and Tobago and other Caribbean islands

Goddard opened Trinidad and Tobagoā€™s first organic food store and founded the Alliance of Rural Communities ā€“ a non-profit that seeks to enlighten farmers about the value of natural resources, ensure their role in public policy development and facilitate their access to the requisite financial tools to boost their production and income.

Rattan Lal to lead consensus-building dialogue on agriculture and the environment in the Americas ahead of COP27

The announcement was made by the Director General of IICA, Manuel Otero, during a meeting held on Tuesday, which brought together about twenty Secretaries and Ministers of Agriculture of the countries of the Americas. Ecuadorian farmer, Lorena Valdez, who founded an association to improve the lives of Afro-descendant women, is named an IICA Leader of Rurality of the AmericasĀ 

The work of Valdez and of AMATIF serves as a positive example for rural areas in the Americas.Ā  The association has already established a cocoa processing plant that produces chocolate and other by-products that are sold throughout the province and plans to expand to international markets.

IICA supports installation of a submersible solar pump system to supply peasant families with water in Bolivia

The system directly benefits 26 families in the Bolivian peasant community of Aguas Negras, whose members raise cattle and grow corn, cassava, and rice. The technology installed is designed to supply some 20,000 liters per day, at a rate of up to 3,000 liters per hour.
