During a visit to Honduras, the Director General of IICA met with President Tito Asfura and pledged technical support for the transformation of the country’ agriculture

At the invitation of President Nasry “Tito” Asfura, the Director General of IICA, Muhammad Ibrahim, visited Honduras, at a time when the Central American country is keen to take full advantage of the agricultural sector as a major driver of economic growth and a promoter of social prosperity.

Tegucigalpa, 20 April 2026 (IICA). At the invitation of President Nasry “Tito” Asfura, the Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), Muhammad Ibrahim, visited Tegucigalpa. In a meeting at the Presidential Palace, he pledged technical support from the specialized international organization for the agricultural transformation of Honduras.

President Asfura and Ibrahim discussed IICA’s role in transforming food systems through technical cooperation, capacity building, public policy design and implementation, and resource mobilization, at a time when the Central American country is keen to take full advantage of the agricultural sector as a major driver of economic growth and promoter of social prosperity, especially in rural areas.

The Director General apprised the President of IICA’s work in using science, technology and innovation to build resilient food systems,and explained how the organization’s efforts are contributing to the Honduran government’s plan to eliminate hunger and improve nutrition and food security.

He also spoke about collaboration to combat transboundary pests and diseases, such as the New World Screwworm in Cattle, Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (TR4) that affects the banana sector, avian flu, and African Swine Fever.

Another topic on the agenda was cooperation to address environmental stress—such as the prolonged drought caused by El Niño, which has implications for food security—and IICA’s work with the Honduran government to implement incentives (“bonos”) for technology, coffee growing,and livestock farming. President Asfura was very keen for IICA to continue implementing this program.

Juan Carlos García, the President’s Chief of Staff, also attended the meeting.

The discussions also focused on measures to deal with the drought in order to ensure food security, including actions related to irrigation, the supplying of seeds and fertilizers, and best practices for planning the planting season.

President Asfura expressed great interest in promoting a plan to build a seed processing plant to ensure a constant supply, and endorsed Director General Ibrahim’s plans for continued efforts to strengthen Honduras’s agrifood sector.

The President’s Chief of Staff, Juan Carlos García, also took part in the meeting.

The IICA Director General thendiscussed this agenda with Moisés Abraham Molina, Secretary of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) of Honduras, including plans to strengthen technical cooperation and resource mobilization on behalf of the local agricultural sector.

He also discussed agricultural development projectsthat would include Honduras’ forest resources, and addressed preparedness measures for the drought expected in the coming months.

The Director General of IICA, Muhammad Ibrahim, also met with the Secretary of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) of Honduras, Moisés Abraham Molina.
