Following the presentation made by the Director General of the Institute on his agency’s work in 2018, the Ambassadors and High-level Representatives to the Organization of American States (OAS) of Argentina, Bolivia, Canada, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Paraguay, the United States and Uruguay, among other nations, applauded the actions of the specialized organization and its contributions to economic and social development in Latin America.

Agreement will capitalize on the work carried out by the PROCAGICA program, which is executed by IICA in Central America to combat coffee leaf rust, and in which CIRAD is involved as a strategic partner. 

In Washington, D.C., the Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), Manuel Otero, presented IICA’s 2018 Annual Report to the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS); the report corresponding to Otero’s first year in office received widespread support from the Ambassadors and Representatives of the Institute’s 34 Member States.

Countries are making headway in developing a regional strategy and national surveillance plans to prevent and control this problem in animal-based products.

Millions of coffee-farming families are unable to cover production costs, overcome debts, maintain employment levels or tend to their crops with the minimum investment required for farming. The Director General of IICA urged the coffee agroindustrial chain and governments to commit to identifying consistent solutions.

During its annual meeting, the Advisory Commission of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) analyzed operational matters together with the Director General, Manuel Otero, who received support to continue restructuring the specialized agency.
