Five Argentinians, whose daily efforts are improving the welfare of their rural communities, are awarded the title IICA Leaders of Rurality of the Americas

The awardees were Patricia Gorza, Andrea Izzo Capella and Milagros Paulón, from central Argentina’s La Pampa region—considered one of the world’s primary food producing areas—along with José Muñoz and Alina Ruiz, who live and work in northern Argentina.

Bernarda Salazar, beekeeper from Ñuble, and Paulina Carrasco, milk producer from the Los Ríos Region, were distinguished as "Rural Leaders" of the Americas by the IICA, recognition given in Chile by Manuel Otero, Director General of the Institute. Along with them, Alfredo Carrasco, vegetable producer and leader of FarmHability, Leader of the Chilean Rurality distinguished in 2021.

The Leaders of Rurality award pays tribute to those who are playing a unique dual role: guaranteeing food and nutrition security, by producing under all circumstances, as well as protecting the biodiversity of the planet. It also emphasizes their capacity to be positive role models in rural areas of the region.

Aviation industry underscores the need for public policies to guarantee investments and enable agriculture in the Americas to achieve its potential for biofuel production

FONTAGRO and IICA launch contest for successful bioeconomy experiences in Latin America and the Caribbean

The contest will be open from 1 February to 16 June 2023. Awards will be given to the following categories: producers’ associations and other private-sector organizations, including NGOs, that work with LAC producers; LAC science and technology institutions and organizations; and the LAC public sector (at all levels).

Krysta Harden, President of the U.S. Dairy Export Council and promoter of a central role for women in the agrifood industry, receives recognition from IICA as a Leader of Rurality in the America

Harden’s passion for agriculture started when she was a girl, growing up on her family’s peanut farm in the southern state of Georgia. She has come a long way since then in private sector work and public service, taking her to the highest levels of decision-making and responsibility. For instance, she was Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for three years.

The STDF and IICA launch project to promote reduced pesticide residue in agricultural exports from 12 Latin American and Caribbean countries, and to facilitate international trade

At the Biodiversity Conference (COP 15), the ministers who make up the Southern Agricultural Council (CAS) emphasize the importance of adopting a science-based approach to agricultural biotechnologies

The ministers argued that biotech issues must be addressed within their specific area and within the scope of the Convention on Biological Diversity, adopted in 1992, in which the international community acknowledges the benefits of biotechnologies. The ministers also pointed out that safe management is possible with risk analysis.

With the support of IICA, the hemispheric organization MIOA will strengthen tools to collect, disseminate and exchange information on agricultural market prices

At the meeting of the MIOA member and partner countries, held at IICA Headquarters in San José, the 26 participating delegations agreed to move forward with a project to design a data dashboard and an application gathering country-specific price information on agricultural products.
