The poultry farm

The production of the poultry farm was used to make breakfast for children at school and in the community health center.

Children who benefited from the project.

Haiti, December 17, 2014 (IICA). After the first year of the project, and given the lack of a good quality source of protein in the population’s diet, the donor was asked to review the budget in order to establish a poultry farm for producing eggs.

The plan was to use the eggs produced on the farm for the breakfast of the most vulnerable segments of the population—the children attending the school and the elderly at the community health center.

The farm of 500 laying hens was set up at the beginning of 2013, once the individuals who were to take charge had been trained.

During the production cycle, efficiency averaged over 80%, which is regarded as first rate. Eggs are sold both in the community and in the city of Jacmel. The nuns will include this product in the schoolchildren’s breakfast throughout the 2014-2015 academic year.

The Secretariat of Animal Production of Haiti’s Ministry of Agriculture regards the operation as a model farm that should be replicated at the national level.
