He will hold discussions on the technical cooperation that the Institute is providing to his country, as well as the challenges and opportunities for today’s agriculture sector
San José, Costa Rica, January 23, 2012 (IICA). Hebert Docteur, Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development of Haiti will be visiting IICA Headquarters on January 24 and 25, to hold talks with respect to the technical cooperation that IICA provides to his country, the challenges facing agriculture today and the opportunities available to the sector.
On January 24, Mr. Docteur will meet with officials of the Institute, at which time the IICA cooperation strategy for Haiti will be presented. In the afternoon, the Minister of Agriculture will visit the Coffee Institute of Costa Rica (ICAFE), and later, he will hold talks with his Costa Rican counterpart, Gloria Abraham.
The following day, January 25, the Haitian Delegation will travel to Earth University in Guacimo to meet with 16 Haitian students doing specialized studies in agronomy.
Haiti has been receiving priority attention from IICA since the devastating 2010 earthquake. By developing its agricultural sector, it is expected that the country’s economy will be strengthened, thereby ensuring food security for the entire population.
On January 27 and 28, Mr. Docteur will visit El Salvador to meet with Guillermo López, Minister of Agriculture of that country, to observe the operation of Farm Schools (Escuelas de Campo), an extension programme developed by IICA. The Minister will evaluate the feasibility of a similar programme being implemented in Haiti.
Ministers of Agriculture of IICA Member countries are invited to visit the organization’s headquarters to learn more about its technical cooperation and to explore new possibilities for working together.
