San Jose, 15 November 2022 (IICA).- The International Consortium on Applied Bioeconomy Research (ICABR), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Argentina invite researchers and academics from Latin America and the Caribbean to submit papers, abstracts and other materials for the 2023 ICABR International Conference, by 30 November of this year.

For the first time in its history, the conference will be held in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). It will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from July 4 to 7, 2023, and will explore “Sustainable transitions in the bioeconomy as a driver of new dynamics in institutional development”.  International specialists are called to submit articles, papers and posters on the following topics:

  1. Institutional transitions to improve sustainability.
  2. Quantification of improved sustainability of value chains.
  3. The role of policies and regulations.
  4. The role of innovation.

Hugo Chavarría, Manager of IICA’s Innovation and Bioeconomy Program, explained that ICABR is one of the most important academic platforms for the global bioeconomy.

“This conference brings together the main institutions and leaders in the bioeconomy sciences, as well as decision-makers, funding agencies and investors. Given the fact that LAC will the hosting the event for the first time ever, we at IICA are certain that this is the ideal opportunity to show the rest of the world our progress with respect to technological and productive developments in the field of bioeconomy, as well as in public policies and institutional frameworks”, said Chavarría.

The 2023 ICABR conference will afford a valuable opportunity to raise awareness among stakeholders in the region of the importance of the bioeconomy as a development model and as a strategy for transforming agrifood and energy systems.

The health, social, economic and environmental crises triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic, in addition to the war in Eastern Europe and, more recently, the global recession, have emphasized the strategic importance of the bioeconomy for food and energy security.

This is reflected in an increase in public policies, national strategies and RDI projects related to the bioeconomy.

Established in 1998, ICABR is one of the leading global consortia of researchers, scientists and academics in the fields of bioeconomy, agricultural biotechnology and rural development. It is currently comprised of more than 15 universities and research centers, including Harvard Kennedy School, Wageningen University, University of California, Berkeley, University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, University of Saskatchewan, Rutgers University and University of Hohenheim, among others.
