During the past year, the IICA Delegation in Trinidad and Tobago, collaborated with the Trinidad and Tobago Goat and Sheep Society (TTGSS) and directed much of its resources in support of the development of the dairy goat industry. This initiative which falls under one of its flagship programmes: Competitiveness and Sustainably of Agricultural Chains, is specially designed to assist the industry in increasing productivity levels and standards of milk quality.

The McGill Centre for the Convergence of Health and Economics (MCCHE), in conjunction with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and the Micronutrient Initiative (MI), launched the 2016 Global Nutrition Report (GNR) in November with an engaging panel and a backdrop of exciting food start-ups. The GNR was however sobering. It underscored the stark realities regarding malnutrition security facing many in the world. Even in Canada, it was recognized that obesity, micronutrient deficiency, and nutrient-related non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers have affected millions of individuals and produced significant social and economic costs.

A member of IICA’s delegation in Canada attended the November 28 – 29, 2016, Canadian Food & Drink Summit 2016, hosted by the Conference Board’s Centre for Food in Canada (CFIC) in Toronto Ontario. The two-day event provided an opportunity to explore the future of Canada’s food sector, and to leverage new opportunities to enhance the food sector’s performance—both provincially and globally.

A mission aimed to strengthen relationships and promote future collaboration between Jamaica and Canada in the area of Small Ruminant genetics was organized by IICA Canada in collaboration with IICA Jamaica, Mr. Robert Lang from Rural Routes international, Grasshill Genetics and the Canadian Livestock Genetics Association (CLGA) Small Ruminant members. Participants of the week-long mission comprised the President of Jamaica’s Small ruminant Association, Mr. Kenneth King, Vice President Mr. Devon Sayers and associated member Mr. Terrence Johnson.
