IICA attends Global Conference in Vietnam, where participants are discussing how food systems can help the world emerge from the crisis

Discussions in the Hanoi forum will focus on the transformations needed to enable food systems to contribute to overcoming the overlapping and interrelated crises now facing humanity, due to climate change, loss of biodiversity, inflation, the energy situation, hunger, malnutrition and the war in Eastern Europe.

IICA Director General Manuel Otero: newest member of Argentina’s National Academy of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine 

The induction ceremony was carried out during an extraordinary public session led by Jorge Errecalde, Chair of the Academy, at its headquarters in the city of Buenos Aires, where Otero then delivered a lecture on “The Challenges Facing Agrifood Systems in the 21st Century”. The Director General of IICA will be a corresponding member of the Academy in Costa Rica, which is home to the headquarters of the organization specializing in agricultural and rural development.

More than 900 people tuned into the live broadcast of the launch event, which was carried out in a packed auditorium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In attendance were Juan José Bahillo, Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of that country; Jorge Neme, Secretary of Development Planning and Federal Competitiveness of the Ministry of the Economy; Gustavo Martínez Pandiani, Undersecretary for Latin American and Caribbean Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Gustavo López, Vice President of the National Communications Entity (ENACOM).

Five Argentinians, whose daily efforts are improving the welfare of their rural communities, are awarded the title IICA Leaders of Rurality of the Americas

The awardees were Patricia Gorza, Andrea Izzo Capella and Milagros Paulón, from central Argentina’s La Pampa region—considered one of the world’s primary food producing areas—along with José Muñoz and Alina Ruiz, who live and work in northern Argentina.

Ministers of the Southern Agricultural Council (CAS) participated in an international conference in Chile to discuss issues of regional interest such as the health situation and the impact of the drought

Among the issues discussed were the health situation following the bird flu outbreak, which had reached 14 countries in the hemisphere by early March, and the need to create a regional fund to deal with the economic consequences of the drought.

Equip farmers with more digital skills to enhance technology use in food production, say experts at a presentation in Chile of a rural connectivity study for Latin America and the Caribbean

The rural connectivity study is a continuation of and update to the first study on this issue, which IICA and its partners undertook in 2020. That study revealed that 77 million people had no access to quality internet services.

Bernarda Salazar, beekeeper from Ñuble, and Paulina Carrasco, milk producer from the Los Ríos Region, were distinguished as "Rural Leaders" of the Americas by the IICA, recognition given in Chile by Manuel Otero, Director General of the Institute. Along with them, Alfredo Carrasco, vegetable producer and leader of FarmHability, Leader of the Chilean Rurality distinguished in 2021.

The Leaders of Rurality award pays tribute to those who are playing a unique dual role: guaranteeing food and nutrition security, by producing under all circumstances, as well as protecting the biodiversity of the planet. It also emphasizes their capacity to be positive role models in rural areas of the region.
