IICA spotlights the Latin American and Caribbean bioeconomy at the Global Bioeconomy Summit 2020

The specialized organization will address the major global bioeconomy summit about experiences with bioeconomy public policies and businesses in Latin America and the Caribbean, to position the region as a trailblazer and leading player in an issue that is key to development.

San Jose, 17 November 2020 (IICA). Starting this Monday, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) will speak about the Latin American and Caribbean region’s experiences with bioeconomy public policies and businesses at the Global Bioeconomy Summit 2020, the major global event on this issue. The Summit runs from 16 to 20 November.

The Global Bioeconomy Summit (GBS) is a biennial international conference, which has become the leading event to globally review and discuss emerging opportunities and challenges of the bioeconomy and develop visions for the future development of a sustainable bioeconomy among key actors from governments, science and innovation, business and civil society.

IICA is an official partner of the Global Bioeconomy Summit 2020 (see webpage for details: https://bit.ly/2Uqkm8f) and will spearhead four key activities:

-Webpage on the Bioeconomy in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).

Online space that summarizes bioeconomy developments in the region in recent years: policies, events, educational programs, books and technical reports, as well as outstanding persons and institutions involved in this sector.

-Workshop: The Regional bioeconomy as a key driver to build up resilient economies – Lessons learned from Latin America and the Caribbean).

Tuesday, 17 November. 16:00-18:30 GMT+1 (Central European Time).

Organized by: IICA and the Group of Producing Countries from the Southern Cone (GPS).

Regional experts will discuss the progress made by the region in terms of bioeconomy policy strategies, initiatives and businesses.

They will also analyze the main bottlenecks and opportunities for the bioeconomy to become a development model for Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Spotlight on IICA as an official partner of GBS2020

Thursday, 19 November. 17:55 – 18:25 GMT+1 (Central European Time).

Hugo Chavarría, Manager of IICA’s Bioeconomy and Production Development Program will introduce this event, making reference to the contrasts in the region’s bioeconomy. Later, Eduardo Trigo, Special Advisor to IICA’s General Directorate and Professor of the Agroindustrial Center of the Universidad Austral of Argentina, will speak with representatives from the public and private sectors and academia about opportunities and challenges in promoting and capitalizing on the bioeconomy in Latin America and the Caribbean.

  • Carolina Balian, Advisor to the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay, (public sector).

  • Federico Trucco, CEO of Bioceres Crop Solutions, Argentina, (private sector).

  • Elizabeth Hodson, Professor Emeritus of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Colombia (academic sector).

-Panel discussion among GBS2020 partners

Friday, 20 November, 16:10 – 16:40 GMT+1 (Central European Time).

Representatives from each of the GBS 2020 partners will discuss the future of bioeconomy in the world, possibilities for South-South Cooperation among countries and regions, the role of international cooperation and the role of governments in fostering a sustainable bioeconomy.

  • John Bell, Director of “Healthy Planet” and Director in the DG Research & Innovation at the European Commission

Dawn Francis, sustainable agriculture and organic farming advocate and a model for small farmers in her native Dominica, is named an IICA Leader of Rurality of the Americas

Francis founded her own organization, EcoBalance Inc., which has organized training programs for farmers and implemented plans for equipment acquisition in the region. It also established a biodiversity center to teach primary and secondary students about agriculture and the environment.
