San José, October 13, 2023 (IICA)- The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) has launched the first edition of the competition Agro-biotourism: Promoting links between the bioeconomy and tourism. The closing date for entries is October 30, 2023.

IICA’s aim in creating this initiative is to identify and reward tourism activities and products linked to bioeconomy practices in Latin America, and demonstrate their socioeconomic and environmental potential.

Hugo Chavarría, Manager of the Innovation and Bioeconomy Program at IICA, explained that tourism is a sector that has major links with the bioeconomy, and can benefit greatly from it, as it makes it possible to increase and diversify both the options available, and the income generated.

“The links between tourism and the bioeconomy also generate linkages with other economic activities in rural territories, as they promote an appreciation for local customs and foster environmental sustainability,” he added.

According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), it is one of the activities that makes the biggest contributions to the economies of Latin America and the Caribbean, accounting for more than 10% of gross domestic product (GDP).

Tourism was one of the sectors most seriously impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but has bounced back and in the coming years is expected to grow at a faster rate than prior to 2019.

International travelers are projected to be one of the fastest-growing groups, as tourists seek more authentic local experiences and are ready to pay more to visit sustainable and environmental destinations.

IICA’s head of innovation and bioeconomy added that agro-biotourism, a concept that is still being developed, is defined as a form of tourism that takes place in rural and urban-rural spaces and seeks the harmonious integration of biodiversity, agriculture and related activities, as well as practices involving the use of the bioeconomy for recreational and commercial purposes.

This synergy gives rise to new tourism products for educational, commercial, cultural and recreational and other purposes that increase the demand for complementary services.

The competition will reward the five best agro-biotourism initiatives in Latin America. The winners will receive cash prizes, scholarships to participate in specialized courses related to the bioeconomy, technical assistance, and mentoring by IICA and partner organizations.

It is open to producers and entrepreneurs and other business owners who work independently or as members of associations or cooperatives, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises that provide tourism services, and research and conservation institutions.

The virtual awards ceremony will take place on November 30, 2023.
