The courses cover topics such as management and productive use of water, food security and innovation, ago-ecotourism and biotechnology.

Professionals in the Caribbean may participate in two courses that will be taught in English: “Agro-Ecotourism,” which begins on November 7, and “Biotechnology and its Application in Agriculture,” which begins on January 16, 2017.

San José, 31 October 2016 (IICA). With the aim of strengthening human resources in the agricultural sector, and fostering agricultural development in Latin America and the Caribbean, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) of Mexico, are offering new and free virtual courses in relevant and innovative topics.

The course entitled “Management and Productive Use of Water for the Sustainable Development of Family Farming,” which will begin on November 14, is one of the training options available. Participants can also learn about the use and representation of geospatial information through a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) that will begin on Thursday, November 3.

Registration is still open for MOOCs in agrifood security and agrifood innovation that are currently underway. These courses were developed by IICA together with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

MOOC-type courses are open courses: every so often over the next three years, free registration will be made available. The only cost that students may need to cover is a fee to receive an optional course certificate; however, course participants may choose not to request a certificate.

Options in English

Professionals in the Caribbean may participate in two courses that will be taught in English: “Agro-Ecotourism,” which begins on November 7, and “Biotechnology and its Application in Agriculture,” which begins on January 16, 2017.

More information about the courses is available on the Institute’s website (www.iica.int) in the section entitled “Learn with Us,” where anyone interested may also register for courses.

These training options are offered within the framework of the Program to Strengthen National Technical Capabilities in the Agricultural Sector, an initiative developed by IICA and SAGARPA since 2014 for the benefit of Central American and Caribbean countries.

This program takes advantage of the technical capacity of Mexican specialists and academic and research institutions in order to share agricultural knowledge and contribute to improving the quality of life of farmers and rural dwellers in the countries of the hemisphere.
