Manuel Otero will assume office at IICA on 15 January

The new Director General will take over the reins of the Institute for the period 2018-2022. The investiture ceremony will be held at IICA Headquarters in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Upon being elected, Otero pledged to promote the well-being of rural populations .

San Jose, 10 January 2018 (IICA). On 15 January, the Director General-elect of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), Manuel Otero, will assume his new position at the helm of this international organization, for the period 2018-2022.

A citizen of Argentina, Otero was unanimously elected in October of last year by the ministers of agriculture of the hemisphere, during the Nineteenth Regular Meeting of the Inter-American Board of Agriculture, held at IICA Headquarters.

Ambassador Néstor Méndez, Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS); and Víctor M. Villalobos, Director General Emeritus of IICA, along with other government officials and authorities from the agricultural sectors of Argentina and Costa Rica, will attend the investiture ceremony.

Otero is a veterinarian with broad experience in science and technology, agricultural trade and health, institutional strengthening and international cooperation. He has displayed great interest in projects related to area-based development and family farming, which demonstrates his profound commitment to development based on social inclusion.

Upon being elected, the 66-year-old Argentinian pledged to promote the well-being of rural populations and expressed his interest in working with under-developed countries to alleviate inequality on our continent.

The event will take place at IICA Headquarters at 10:30 a.m. local time.
