The third hemispheric meeting of ministers and secretaries of Agriculture will seek to drive the recovery and transformation of the region’s agrifood systems, which have been affected by the pandemic.
San Jose and Santiago, 14 April 2021. The ministers and secretaries of Agriculture of the Americas will hold a third hemispheric meeting to share progress with respect to policies, plans and actions to curb the spread of COVID-19, as well as new initiatives aimed at driving the recovery of agrifood systems, food security, agriculture and rural areas.
The virtual meeting, which will be held on 15 April, is organized by the Ministry of Agriculture of Peru, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
In attendance at the event will be Federico Tenorio, Minister of Agricultural Development and Irrigation of Peru; QU Dongyu, Director General of FAO; Manuel Otero, Director General of IICA; and Julio Berdegué, FAO Regional Representative. Ministers and secretaries of Agriculture of the Americas will also participate.
The III hemispheric meeting will provide a detailed assessment of the status of agrifood systems, with special emphasis on small-scale producers, who have been hit the hardest by the pandemic.
The countries will identify successful experiences and lessons learned that can be shared at the regional level, with a focus on the recovery and transformation of agrifood systems.
This will be the third occasion on which the ministers and secretaries of Agriculture of the Americas will meet virtually with support from IICA and FAO. The first meeting, which was held on 22 April 2020, was promoted by Chile; the second meeting, sponsored by Mexico, was held in July of last year.
