Colombia and IICA agree to strengthen joint work in support of agricultural modernization during visit by the Institute’s Director General to Bogotá

Bogotá, 15 May 2026 (IICA) – The Government of Colombia and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) agreed to strengthen their partnership in support of the modernization and resilience of the country’s agriculture sector, in order to help improve productivity and living conditions in rural areas.

The agreement was reached by the Director General of IICA, Muhammad Ibrahim, during a visit to Bogotá, and the Deputy Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs, Mauricio Jaramillo Jassir, during a meeting at Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, which was also attended by the IICA Representative in the country, Breno Tiburcio, emphasis was placed on the importance of international cooperation for Colombia in addressing the multiple challenges facing the agriculture sector, which is one of the main drivers of the country’s economic and social development.

Knowledge and innovation

“The Colombian government and IICA have consolidated a partnership aimed at promoting knowledge and innovation in rural areas, which we consider the central tools for building a more sustainable, inclusive and environmentally responsible agriculture,” said Ibrahim.

“Colombia’s agriculture sector has enormous growth potential, because it has an extraordinary wealth of natural resources, a dynamic private sector and a solid institutional framework composed of committed public entities. IICA is also committed to the agricultural growth objectives pursued by Colombia,” he added.

For his part, Jaramillo Jassir highlighted the work that IICA has been carrying out in Colombia and the technical and technological support the hemispheric organization has provided to advance the first point of the Final Peace Agreement signed in 2016, which refers to the need to transform rural realities, combat poverty, and promote agricultural development and equity.

“For the Colombian government, rural development is a priority. IICA is therefore the perfect partner, not only for developing a more modern vision of the sector, but also for implementing actions that are responsible in terms of land management and the building of stronger capacities for those who live in rural areas,” said the Deputy Minister.

The IICA Representative in Colombia, Breno Tiburcio, thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for supporting the Institute and stated that the organization’s office in Colombia will continue working in accordance with the demands and needs of the country’s agriculture sector.
