Rattan Lal and IICA launch “Living Soils of the Americas” initiative

Ohio State University Professor and winner of the 2020 World Food Prize, Rattan Lal, is partnering with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) in an initiative that will bring together science, governments and fieldwork to restore soil health. The date of the agreement was chosen in commemoration of World Soil Day, which is celebrated on December 5.

IICA-BID-MICROSOFT DOCUMENT “RURAL CONNECTIVITY IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN – A BRIDGE TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN TIMES OF THE PANDEMIC” The study focused on 24 countries throughout all of Latin America and the Caribbean. Average rural connectivity is approximately half of connectivity levels in urban areas. Limitations in available information about the status of rural connectivity and obsolete regulatory frameworks have hindered the implementation of policies to accelerate rural digital inclusion.

In 17 of the 23 Latin American and Caribbean countries analyzed, the number of women who report owning a mobile phone is lower compared to men. The greater the gender gap with respect to mobile phone ownership, the lower women’s participation in the workforce. Rural women are the least connected group.
