At COP29, AECID and IICA outline plans for stepping up joint efforts to strengthen resilience in Latin American and Caribbean agriculture

The AECID and IICA have an ongoing, intensive program of joint activities. They are implementing a number of international cooperation projects, especially in countries such as El Salvador, Paraguay and Bolivia, in addition to regional projects in the Central American Dry Corridor, one of the most vulnerable areas in the world, in both social and climatic terms.

ALADI and IICA promote inter-institutional cooperation for regulatory convergence in Latin America to implement equivalence agreements on sanitary and phytosanitary measures

During the event, held at IICA's headquarters, more than 20 representatives from official sanitary, phytosanitary, and food safety services participated in discussions aimed at strengthening countries’ capacity to understand and implement equivalence agreements on sanitary and phytosanitary measures, thus facilitating global and regional trade in agri-food products.

IICA will have a pavilion at the most important global forum for negotiations and discussions on climate change for the third consecutive time, having previously operated one at COP27 in Egypt in 2022, and COP28 in the United Arab Emirates.

At pre-COP29 summit, IICA and other sector leaders from around the world underscore the urgent need to speed up the development of the bioeconomy to tackle global challenges

The participants in the different discussion panels held in the run-up to COP29 emphasized the importance of the bioeconomy as a strategy for strengthening agrifood systems, reversing biodiversity loss, addressing health challenges, and using innovation as a driver of new economic opportunities, especially the creation of jobs for young people.

Otero explained that agriculture has an essential role in mitigating climate change, while also undergoing a transformation to adapt to the increasingly adverse production conditions ushered in by the climate crisis.

Representing the Latin American Network, IICA joins organizations worldwide in an alliance to promote the bioeconomy as a global paradigm for sustainable development.

Some of the institutions joining the alliance, in addition to IICA, include FAO, the European Space Agency, the Global University Alliance, the International Bioeconomy Forum, the World Economic Forum, and the Global Bioeconomy Alliance.
